In 2010, after having just recently turned 14-years-old, I had enough of pretending to be someone I was not.
One cold February night in 2010, while I was away on vacation with my family in Masthope, Pennsylvania (and after having watched Matthew Lush’s YouTube video about coming out of the closet alone at night after everyone had fallen asleep), I decided that I had enough of pretending to be someone I was not. Less than a week later, I came out to my friend, Jaclyn Weiner, while my friends and I were having a Tim Burton movie marathon in anticipation of the new Alice in Wonderland film that was coming out a month later.
Today, as a 27-year-old gay man, I am in awe of the bravery I had as just a kid, and wish nothing more than for kids today not to feel that pain I know so well. Please enjoy this video I made twelve years ago in 2011, reflecting on my coming out one year later.
